Chris Falkenstein
Lead Photography Guide
(Photography Sessions)

An avid rock climber, Chris moved to Yosemite in 1972 and has lived here ever since. Living in Yosemite has offered many opportunities such as rock climbing, hiking, camping, kayaking, and skiing. These adventures brought Chris to many unique areas of the park that sparked his interest in photography. He began to carry a camera with him on every excursion to capture images of climbers, skiers, and sunsets from various locations off the beaten trail.
Chris is a former director of the Ski Patrol at Badger Pass in Yosemite and continues to work there part time. A former Yosemite Mountaineering School climbing and Nordic ski guide, Chris has climbed hundreds of Yosemite's climbing routes and has a wealth of knowledge of the park's terrain.

YOSEMITE HORSETAIL FALL
PHOTO SESSION
with Chris Falkenstein
Photographing Yosemite’s Firefall
Date: February, 2009
Horsetail Fall is an ephemeral waterfall on the Eastern flank of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. For a brief time during the month of February, an utterly stupendous photographic opportunity may exist if all the necessary conditions are present. A naturally occurring "firefall" lights up the waterfall in splendid tones of orange and sometimes pink. Our abbreviated 2-hour tour will go to a proper location for unfettered viewing of these natural phenomena. We will talk about lens selection, proper support and techniques for ultra-sharp images of this fleeting moment. This is a very rare and spectacular event and all the events for it to happen must line up at just the "critical moment". Learn how to best capture a photograph of this beautiful convergence of natural elements, and bring home a photograph and a memory of a lifetime.
This Specialty Photography Tour will only be offered for a limited time in February and will last approximately two hours.
