Robb hirsch

“I endeavor to create visually compelling images that evoke emotion and an appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us.”-R. Hirsch

Trained academically as a biologist and natural historian, Robb Hirsch developed an intimate relationship with the natural world. This connection was established early during annual visits to Yosemite, exploring and developing a sense of oneness with this magical place. He established a career as a field biologist, working for United States Geological Survey, California State Parks and several private firms, focusing primarily on threatened and endangered species. He originally gave slide shows to a wide variety of groups utilizing his photography as a tool to educate others about the natural world and the importance of wild places. His passion became a career when he realized there was a market for his images.

Robb prefers to photograph away from the crowds, often visiting previously scouted locations off the beaten path. Photography is part of the wilderness experience for him, and by spending considerable time exploring, scouting and waiting for the right light, he becomes more in tune with the area, ultimately culminating in more evocative images.

Robb works very carefully in the field with techniques to properly capture the moment, minimizing time needed in front of a computer to “fix” problems. He enjoys shooting everything from wildlife to wildflowers, from grand landscapes to tiny abstracts. Robb’s images are known for their compelling subjects, careful compositions and fine light.

In 2002, Robb and his wife started Mountain Sage, a combination art gallery and plant nursery and gardens, just outside Yosemite National Park , in Groveland. Several rooms of the historic house are dedicated as gallery space, displaying large framed prints. His photography is also on display at the Ahwahnee gift shop in Yosemite Valley and online at robbhirschphoto.com. In 2007 one of his images was named a winner in the Nature’s Best, Windland Rice Smith International Nature Photography Competition, one of the most prestigious worldwide contests. His images have also appeared on the cover and inside of Sierra Seasons and in textbooks.

HETCH HETCHY FALLS AND FLOWERS
with Robb Hirsch

Dates: Mid-May (Twin Valleys Waterfalls Workshops)

Price- $175 per person

With several striking waterfalls and colorful wildflower displays, Hetch Hetchy offers a multitude of potential subjects to photograph in a far less crowded setting than Yosemite Valley.  Emphasis for this workshop will be placed on creating strong compositions, teaching techniques for shooting waterfalls and wildflowers, the art of pre-visualizing images to be more productive, and reading light to best utilize the current conditions.  Learn how to become more creative with photography by manually choosing apertures and shutter speeds and shooting a scene in a variety of ways to isolate the subject or put it in the context of the surrounding environment. Come away with fine images of this intriguing landscape and more importantly the knowledge to better capture quality images of the natural world wherever you may be.

PHOTOGRAPHY BACKPACK TOUR
YOUNG LAKES (3 Days/2 Night)

with Robb Hirsch

Dates: 9.19-21.2011

Price- $1050 - 1500 per person

Backpacking with photography gear is one of the most rewarding and productive means to shoot an area. The self sufficiency of carrying everything one needs to live is extremely empowering and strengthens the wilderness experience. Photographically, it allows the opportunity to shoot less visited areas, away from the crowds and pullouts that everyone sees; and by spending several days in a backcountry location, one becomes more in tune with the surroundings, submersed in the environment, which ultimately produces more evocative images.

Join professional photographer Robb Hirsch as he leads a small group, on a three day, two night backpack photography trip to Young Lakes in Yosemite. This is an ideal location for a backcountry workshop. The hike in to the designated base camp is moderate (about seven miles) with little elevation gain; this will allow for short photographic excursions without carrying all one's gear. There is an abundance of macro to intimate to grand landscape opportunities within a relatively small geographic area and access across the terrain is relatively easy.

This trip is intended for people with at least some backpacking experience and in good physical condition. This type of adventure is only slightly out of the reach for many people as carrying all of the gear can be overwhelming. To make this trip more accessible, all food, bear-proof canisters (required in Yosemite backcountry) and cooking materials will be carried in for the group. Participants will carry their photo gear and all other backpacking gear; this should be somewhere in the range of 35-50lbs. Details regarding required and suggested gear will be discussed in detail with participants.

This is a photography trip more than a backpacking one. We will use backpacking to provide access to shooting a more remote area, but once there, photography will be the priority. We will shoot all sunrises and sunsets from predetermined locations and spend some of the midday hours scouting, looking for new compositions.  All along the way expect in depth discussion and instruction about the functional operations of the camera, workflow in the field and the artistic side of isolating compositions and pre-visualizing images to best capture them in complimentary light. Participants will also gain numerous tips and tricks that can make this type of photography more productive and enjoyable. In addition to capturing great images, the goal is to give the clients the tools to create the best possible photographs wherever they may be.
