Dear Visitors,

I would like to beginย with a very friendlyย hello and welcome you to our home in the Sierra Nevada mountains. While you are here, I would like to ask you to please do your part to keep our home clean and beautiful. I too was once a visitor here, but something funny happened on my first visit to California’s largest mountain range.ย I fell in love with this place so much that I moved my family here over a decade ago. Our idea wasย toย enjoy nature’s peace and solitude while sharing adventures with California visitors from all over the world. I make my living welcoming people to Yosemite National Park who join me on outdoor adventures that open their eyes to nature and enrich their lives while encouraging them to help protect these wild lands that need our help.

We love this area so much for its unique character and pristine wilderness. Many of usย try to do our part to keep it that way. Our business, YExplore, has adopted a 2 mile stretch of highway on HWY 120 just outside Yosemite that we clean up a few times each year. We live on the other side of Tuolumne County alongย HWY 108. We love that we live only about a half hour from Pinecrest Lake in the Stanislaus National Forest. This has been an incredible winter, and we have visited the lake and nearby sledding areas several times already this season. We’ve shared the slopes and even our sleds with many people from Sacramento, the Bay Area, and the Central Valley. It’s so fun to witness families of so many different cultures playing together and coming up to our area for unique opportunities to experience snow.

What’s not fun is seeing our roads and hillsides littered with hundreds of pounds of trash. As stewards for our natural lands, it is incumbent upon each of us to continue to raise awareness to this unsightly problem. Last Sunday, my wife Catherine and I removed a truckload of broken sleds and other trash from the Little Sweden area. We filled the entire cargo area of our Jeep and brought it to the Stanislaus National Forest Ranger Station at Pinecrest. Despite the fact that the trash was collected alongside the highway and on private land, the rangers answered the call to the greater good and graciously accepted our deposit to their nearly full dumpsters. We are not the first group to handle the enormous piles of trash, and we certainly will not be the last. I am aware of others who filled truckloads of broken sleds, soiled diapers, cans, bottles, and other various items. Oneย local hiking group recently heldย a service day that removed numerous dumpsters full of litter from our local region. The media has also been helpful, but we need more assistance from them to persuade visitors to be responsible.ย It would also be great to see the radio stations of the Central Valleyย release more public service announcements addressing our issues of the utmost regional importance.

Little Sweden is probably the most popular sledding area on Highway 108 just before Pinecrest Lake. Over the past few months, there have been reports, social media posts, and calls to news stations to expressing outrage over these obvious transgressions against our small mountain communities that are often overwhelmed by the traffic and trash these surges in visitation bring. I am not outraged, however. Instead, I would like to educate those who are looking to get away from places like the San Joaquin Valley to enjoy our little slice of paradise. Come to the mountains and get their good tidings; just please do it responsibly. Pack out everythingย you bring. If your sled breaks, please bring it back out with you. The piled up broken sleds are not only unsightly, they also create a hazard for others who are trying to enjoy the slopes. My ten year old daughter made a huge run only to scrape across a half uncovered broken sled that knocked her off her saucer at the end ofย her epic slide. She wasn’t hurt badly, but it was another example of a senseless act that had dangerous repercussions far deeper than the perpetrator could have imagined.

Thank you to the Stanislaus National Forest Pinecrest Ranger Station who graciously accepted the truckload of trash in their dumpsters.

I wasn’t always a tree hugging mountain lover. I used to be city dweller from the biggest American city, andย Iย will admit that I was not very diligent about protecting the environment in my younger years. But now I am trying to make up for lost time. Education needsย to start somewhere, and that somewhere is here.

Thank you to the Stanislaus National Forest Pinecrest Rangers who graciously accepted the truckload of trash in these dumpsters.

I am hopeful that this pleaย and these photos are distributed to thousands of people who are planning to visit the snow play areas of the Sierra Nevada. So if you decide to take a trip up to our beloved Sierra during one of the remaining winter weekends, my message to you is to begin to develop a conscience about the places where you play. Remove all the trash you make and take anything else you see while you are at it. Once you develop the love of place, I assure that you will feel so much better about your experience and yourself that it will profoundly changeย your life. Think of your children and the examples you can set for them. You also have the opportunity to create a new generation of stewards for this land that desperately needs them. Learn to leave no trace, and let nature make it’s impact on you.

Thank you,

A concerned resident who loves this land

Other suggestions to help alleviate this problem of pollution:
  • Deployment of more CHP officers during busy winter weekends to maintain order and educate the public (this would easily be funded by the illegal parking tickets that would be abundant)
  • Attaching an excise tax to every sled sold in the state of California to cover clean up costs for highly polluted areas
  • Activating volunteer groups to interact with visitors while providing Leave No Trace ethics training
